marlin 336 xlr problems

That’s an astute observation as similarly priced modern levers such as the Browning BLR or Henry Long Ranger in such chamberings as the 308w should always outperform ye olde 30-30. They were undeniably the worst rifles Marlin had ever made. To make the most use of these drawings, production engineers also revisited the Marlin manufacturing process. All systems operated exactly as they should, from the very soft recoil pad to the cross-bolt safety. In an era of computer aided design and CNC machines, Marlin rifles were still being turned out by hand on 60 year-old machines. In fact this problem can be mitigated through a bit of home tinkering by RTV silicone-bedding the forend, but that’s a subject for another day! One thing if you do decide on a Marlin most definitely get one that was made before Remington bought out Marlin. Papa, I don't think I said, "I love you," near enough.

I can't comment on the XLR 30/30 (but do have a plain jane 336 30/30 which is a damn nice rifle). Or, rather, denying that title to any Marlin 336 manufactured prior to 2007 would be.

Come join the discussion about optics, hunting, gunsmithing, styles, reviews, accessories, classifieds, and more! Regardless of anything else, we’ve always found lever-action rifles come up to the shoulder incredibly well, and the 336XLR is certainly no exception. And (arguably) the ballard rifling should stabilise cast lead bullets better than the modern 1:10 microgroove barrels (which you will find in most 336’s). As you can see in the pictures, there are no bolt-knobs or other paraphernalia sticking out the sides of a 336XLR; it’s just one smooth, slick package. Hey gqucool, thanks for the thoughts but my X-bolt for better or worse sold a couple of weeks back ....maybe i should have invested more time into it ....but once a gun starts "non-performing" i tend to lose patience with them very quickly and move them on....infact i have also sold a Thompson Pro Hunter since then for the same reason (i dont seem to be having much luck of late with my rifles of choice). In order to make this process easier, Marlin pared down their offerings from 29 models to just 18. First off, by being stainless steel, you typically are rewarded by a better bore. Would the level of craftsmanship and quality demonstrated with our 336XLR be acceptable at any of those price points? Throughout our testing, the 336XLR was 100% reliable. Overall I was encouraged by the quality of the Marlin XLR 336; the attention to detail is where the XLR far surpasses your average 336. All but one liked the Hornady loads, so you never know for sure until you try them. The result was nothing short of catastrophic.

It is supposed to be a working gun, after all, and given the progress that’s been made as of late to bring Marlin back to its former glory, we have no doubt they will only continue to get better. Frank Kenna rebuilt the company from the ground up by slowly reintroducing some of the company’s most well-known models, as well as establishing the Marlin razor blade company. A longer 24″ lever gun is a hard thing to come by these days. In the last few years, Remington has invested in $8M worth of new CNC machines, as demand for Marlin rifles begins to recover to pre-2007 levels. NOTE: I replaced my factory trigger with the drop in “Wild West Guns: Trigger Happy Kit” trigger, as this gun will be used for target shooting – after all I do like my aftermarket triggers! the barrel has a tendency to expand and move away from the timber, thus resulting in a vertical wandering point of impact. You'll have a further effective range, more killing power at every range, more ammo variety, and likely a more accurate rifle. The Marlin 336 is a beautiful gun. It’s on-par, if not better than the aftermarket Limbsaver pad I had to add to my 336w: Even though it’s a laminated timber stock, the colouring and checkering is well finished. When I first got my 336 the action was pretty rough. But there are still problems. Let us know what you come up with. The XLR’s slower 1:12 ballard-style cut-rifling really does seem to stabilise (specifically) the Hornady Flex-Tip projectiles exceptionally well, in fact better than any 30-30 I’ve ever seen. During our testing it was easy to see why. Furthermore, the 336XLR models forgo the traditional barrel bands found on 336 carbines and feature a barrel that’s four inches longer. I have used the .270 & .243 Win. The wandering direction can seem counter-intuitive, however remember that any barrel taper can impact such characteristics.

cartridge into a 250+ yard deer dropper. This had very serious industry effects, as companies like Rossi and Henry gained significant market share on the collapse of Marlin’s quality control. The XLR has ballard style cut rifling that should (in theory) stabilize cast lead bullets better than the normal microgroove barrels you find in most 336’s. And 25 grains of AR2206H also with a muzzle velocity of ~1800fps  also groups consistently into around 2moa, even with a piping-hot barrel, which has real potential as a longer-range target load. Both look and shoot like new. As much as I like my 336, I'd trade it for a stainless 336. Then, in 1948, the gun got an overhaul once more in favor of the current Marlin 336. As a result, it’s far more resistant to corrosion and the elements, and has become a favourite amongst Canada’s hunters. This is fine if you only intend on scoping, but if iron-sights are your jam, you’ll appreciate the longer sight radius of a 24″ barrel. Yes and no. Were we to take this test gun in to exchange it and find our replacement rifle was devoid of that solitary pry mark and one or two other issues, we’d be happy. But can Marlin’s latest 336 lever action rifle, the 336XLR, measure up to the 336’s of old? It’s the world’s second most popular lever action rifle (the top spot being held by Winchester’s Model 94), with over six million 336’s produced. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, many of Marlin’s production staff did not follow the company to New York. It didn’t help that with the departure of Marlin’s staff, so too went the knowledge on precisely what sizes and shapes various parts were supposed to be. That being said, were we a potential buyer, this particular gun would be going back to the retailer for an exchange if for no other reason than the pry marks on the bottom and the rear of the bolt not lining up with the receiver. Good luck personally think New Zealand really offers some out standing hunting and fishing there!

However, since 2012, things have been looking up, and Marlin is slowly reintroducing new models as more blueprints are completed and the production line staff get ever better at making rifles. On an almost $1,000 rifle, there’s simply no reason for there to be any sort of pry mark on it, and those are the sort of issues that once noticed, can’t be unseen.

( Log Out /  Literally. Working up handloads, 21 grains of AR2207 under a 150gr plated bullet with a muzzle velocity of around 1800fps groups south of 2moa, encroaching on the 1moa mark: 50m group, Berry’s 150gr copper plated bullet. Again, none of these issues had any bearing on the rifle’s performance, and to be fair we did take a particularly close look at this rifle. If the 336 XLR is 5 years old, it was produced prior to when Remington took over production from Marlin. That's normal, though, for any kind of rifle and ammo combo. This shotgun had a pistol grip stock made of walnut, a 20-inch barrel length, and a full tube magazine. for years got many deer with both calibers. Even the recoil pad wasn’t spared and looks like it’s been crudely eroded away at the toe by some means. ( Log Out /  Followers 0. problem with marlin 336 30-30. Oral historians say the Marlin name was so tarnished that the auction was attended by several children, a small dog, and a lawyer named Frank Kenna who bid just $100 for the right to purchase the faltering company and its $100,000 mortgage. The XLR omits the traditional barrel bands (at the cost of the magazine capacity). Second Media Corp., 111 Peter Street, Suite 901, Toronto, Ontario, M5V 2H1, Canada. If you look at the serial # and note the 1st two numbers; 02= 2008 production, 03= 2007, 04= 2006 production and those rifles would more than likely be just fine. The 30/30 really in most case's is a 150 yd rifle though my Dad shot deer with his 30/30 much farther then 150 yds. This is just a suggestion have you tried different loads thru your 7mm08. After the war, consumer product production restarted under the Marlin banner as a separate corporation, but struggled to gain momentum and was finally auctioned off. This is the ultimate long-range evolution of our traditional lever action Model 336. The wandering direction can seem counter-intuitive, however remember that any barrel taper can impact such characteristics. If you could lay your hands on a pre 64 Winchester in any caliber thats a rare find! And cast-lead pills through ballard-rifle lever guns is highly documented. I still own my first Marlin a 336 gold trigger 30-30 bought new around 1970 and also a Marlin 22 caliber 29A lever action from the same period. Furthermore, and perhaps most telling, Remington could find no dimensional drawings for any of the firearms being produced. The precise method by which Marlin had been building some of the most popular rifles on earth had literally been passed down from generation to generation without a single pen touching paper. But that is due to the level of quality we expect of a rifle carrying the $920ish dollar price tag that the 336XLR does, though most Marlin rifles can be had for far less. Marlin XLR 336 vs Connecticut era JM Marlin 1894CB You might be wondering why one would purchase a (comparatively) expensive Marlin XLR 30-30. Only a self-deluded fool depends entirely on LE to save his or her bacon when the fecal matter hits the rotating oscillator. In fact he would have bought my rifle that day from me....but it's not for sale ! Driven at 2300fps+ (which can be achieved with the longer 24″ barrel) it’s wind-bucking ability is not to be scoffed at.

If you put a 336XLR on your finger and find the balance point, it hovers somewhere between the front of the action and the front of the ejection port, depending on how many rounds are in the tubular magazine slung beneath the barrel. The tolerances are noticeably tighter; some of my rough old handloads are a squeeze to chamber; I’ll need to tweak my trims and OALs to suit this rifle. 7mm08 is suppose to be a great caliber & the Browning X-Bolt are suppose to be really nice rifles.

Being only three years removed from Remington’s first actual 336 blueprint, it makes sense that the priority would be on building functional guns if not perfectly pretty ones. This is common for a lever gun due to the direct contact between the timber forend and barrel. You can shoot any 30-30 ammo in it, but by using the Leverevolution you can take advantage of the increased velocity that the 24" XLR …
