I became so immersed in this book and with the characters that it was like being on an emotional rollercoaster. The plot flowed seamlessly and the characters really seemed to come to life. I also plan to make, I liked this Dear America book much better then the Oregon Trail one. It’s insane that white people really were able to have slaves and thought they were happy being a slave. Sometimes mistaken, too, in her initial judgments of people, Hattie still makes friends along the trail, and her experiences broaden her outlook.

4.5 stars. I looked at the letters more closely. Welcome back. Children will find Clotee a sympathetic narrator whose insights will take them beyond the stereotypical views of plantation life.
