How Rapidly Is Interaction Design Evolving. This makes for a low bar in terms of accessibility and reduces the amount of time a new user will need for getting acquainted with its functionality. I also use block references to describe the specific equation (usually by referencing the equation, and then applying the children as well if it makes sense). So, maybe it would make sense to create one block only pages. In Ahrens’ terminology, I capture several “fleeting notes” and “literature notes” (e.g. I’d also recommend this tool for anyone doing serious writing and research. I map this idea to Luhmann’s workflow of placing similar notes physically next to each other and sub-branching their IDs if they built on the same concept. Unlike other apps, Roam makes it easy for you to do exactly this, which is why I love it so much. as blocks in my daily notes page.

It encourages you to think topically instead of linearly. For hours each morning, I’d sit in my home office and write notecard after notecard in service to building a “second brain” that I could lean on to help me make the unique connections necessary for what might be considered interesting research. I’ve wound up using a sort of combination in some of the zettels I’ve been making for my current research project. I use pages as “hubs”, still… but trying to treat blocks as the atomic level on which to Zettelkast feels more powerful. I like the idea of permanent notes as blocks, but since every bracketed reference becomes a page, and you are encouraged to use these references liberally, creating a page for your permanent thoughts does not strike me as an overkill. I noticed Roam doesn’t link pages if only blocks are referenced. Roam is a note-taking tool designed for networked thought. I needed a digital tool to replace the analog notecards that I’d worked so hard to create. Here’s my workflow that I’ve iterated on and found has worked well for my personal situation: A few extra details outside of my main workflow: Keep in mind that the Zettelkasten’s definition has soft-edges and its makeup relies heavily on your context. Just keep in mind that using blocks makes it difficult if you ever want to export Roam to another database like Obsidian, which only has “pages”. There was also another issue with the method that really struck to the heart of its utility: it didn’t help me coalesce my approach because it didn’t allow for intuitive nonlinear causality. What are your experiences saying you about your processes? Anthony Clemons. Roam … There’s also no place to upload files and other documents to the ideas that you’re linking them to. Can you please give us some examples of actual pages and blocks madam? Thank you all for sharing, it is insightful to see how others are using the method. ... Roam Research. While I hope Roam finds a way to provide users with offline accessibility via an app or downloadable software, the connectivity requirement doesn’t detract too much in terms of its utility, for now. Roam Research: The Digital Zettelkasten. An idea just came to my head, I’m going to try to put a complete zettel in the title, a short one of course, and use it as an embed page reference when writing a permanent note. I like your approach, is really interesting, so “Sonke Ahrens”. There’s a moderate learning curve, but it’s not so much that it requires learning markdown or HTML/CSS (this is a requirement with some similar tools). I’m currently mixing things, creating more generic, topic oriented pages and nesting more specific notes. In just a couple of days, I was using Roam as well as many of those I’d watched online. As easy to use as a document. This is an online tool that’s essentially the grandchild of the traditionally analog version of the Zettelkasten. I’ll continue using Roam Research as my primary tool for compiling notes and ideas. But I definitely want some way to be able to access this information regardless of Roam’s future status. I’ve found that managing the ideas that I have and the information that I come across and then finding unique connections between all of it has been something that I’ve always struggled with. When I need to say literally “The starling equation is governed by hydrostatic and oncotic pressures,” I use the page reference. I plan on using the concept of index pages as a gateway into important ideas where I will explicitly link to pages but I haven’t had the need to implement this yet. I like this functionality in Evernote, but the loss of it with Roam is negated quite a bit because I can hyperlink to most of the articles and papers I find. After months of carrying around (and loosing more than a few notecards), I came across Roam Research… If you liked this idea I’d check out Andy Matuschak’s notes on this: https://notes.andymatuschak.org/z3XP5GRmd9z1D2qCE7pxUvbeSVeQuMiqz9x1C. 53 Research & Reading; 245 The Zettelkasten Method; 38 Writing; 203 Software & Gadgets; 11 Workflows; 395 The Archive; 42 Resolved Issues; 33 Your Current Projects; 42 Project: Zettelkasten.de; 72 Random; 230 Introduce Yourselves! Roam’s hypothesis is that popular tools like Evernote, Google Docs and Notion are flawed for research and note-taking because they’re more like a book of pages than a pile of index cards. ***Hey everyone! When revisiting the note in the future, linking within the content helps me understand the context of the related note and where my head was going at the time of making the connection. Thank you for your comments, @mattbrockwell! But it seems to be killing Roams features! Between the bi-directional linkages, the graphical overlay, and the other tools that come with this Roam Research has created exactly what I need to bring together unique ideas and increase the chances of intellectual serendipity.

My method is based on the Zettelasten Method, invented by Niklas Luhmann.

The tool isn’t without its faults, though.

I wanted to see the connective tissue of my information and ideas much like that of a mind map, with nodes and child nodes, and linkages to the papers the nodes correlated to, while also being able to see how the nodes linked together in my digital/mental web of information. Roam Research – A note taking tool for networked thought. Hi all, if anyone out there is working on developing a personal Zettelkasten system, the following article that Soenke Ahrens just posted on Twitter is worth a look. But converting these into permanent notes seems like a daunting task, and I’m wondering what methods people use? I’ve learned over the last couple of years, though, that interesting is a loaded word that’s filled with implications and expectations on the part of the researcher and writer. When I started taking notes, I did it just like Luhman did decades ago: pencil-written notecards and a stationary storage unit for housing those sacred pulp placards, overlaid with graphite. This means that you can focus your brain on thinking and coming up with new ideas instead of … As powerful as a graph database.

Hi, I can’t find the reference tweet where I saw him write about “block level thinking” as being of primary importance, but if you search Twitter with. In December 2019, I read a Medium post by David Clear, PhD on a Medium page called The Writing Cooperative. What is Roam Research? A block or a page? At the end of the day, I review and process all my notes from the daily notes page. I allow multiple blocks (Zettels) to live in a single page (concept). After that, I can then see how that term (part of the database of other terms) graphically connects in the bigger picture. This way, the graph overview diagram cannot show the relations between pages/blocks/zettels. Maybe put all zettels/permanent notes under a [[permanent notes]] page. Most of the tools had some sort of bi-directional linkage, with folder structures that allowed me to see where my idea coupled into another file. Linking in Roam is for pages. Trying to keep a natural behavior, not stressing too much about the method…. When I’m done, the daily notes page is empty. After drafting hundreds of notecards and trying to keep them in some semblance of order traveling to/from work and anywhere else, the process became more onerous than I’d anticipated.

I rely on the bi-directional linking for my connections and so far it has served my needs. Powered by Discourse, best viewed with JavaScript enabled, This simple but powerful analog method will rocket your productivity, https://notes.andymatuschak.org/z3XP5GRmd9z1D2qCE7pxUvbeSVeQuMiqz9x1C. thanks for reminding me of the graph view, especially applied to particular pages, seems like it will continue to have a valuable role. How do you define its inter relationships? I’m trying that same technique to name my pages or zettels or ideas or permanent notes, name them with questions or “article tittles” but is difficult. Already read that note about api evergreen notes but I didn’t understand it quite well, until now, ok until I read your post here, thanks again. However, I felt like I needed a visual of the information I came across and how that correlated to something else and so on. I had the same view until I realised that’s the whole point. Conor is becoming evangelical on exactly this, by the way.
