Every Animated Film Made from 1888 – present. After ASTRO BOY and KIMBA Osamu Tezuka and Eiichi Yamamoto created the erotic animerama trilogy, starting with A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS, a super trippy, fun and weird, but also a bit too long and convoluted kind of animated erotica Ralph Bakshi would later get famous for, only this is somewhat more stylish and classy. The other two films in the trilogy are CLEOPATRA and (the rather famous) BELLADONNA OF SADNESS, which are supposed to be even better. The story is also more fragmentary compared to Cleopatra when it should be exactly the other way around, seeing that this focus more on storyline than visual aspects. After being tortured, Aldin eventually manages to escape only to find his beloved dying in childbirth. Gorgeous and sumptuous in it's visual flare, yet I feel my lack of knowledge of the source text betrays me somewhat, as Tezuka clearly truncated much, and I didn't much care for some of the incongruous imagery. Sadly, A Thousand and One Nights is further along the lines of conventionalism and way too long. Preserving this list for posterity as it disappeared. Maybe the least efficient and coherent of the three Animerama films but certainly no less ambitious, like the others a scattershot of animation styles, this one focusing elements of the Arabian Nights folklore into a saga of the power of female sex throughout history and the naive blindness inherent in male desire. I wasn't able to find a copy of 'A Thousand and One Nights' with subs but decided it was worth it for the visuals, and I was right. Daniel and the two friends spend there time combing the b... Storyline:On a gloomy Monday morning, my week begins. Sound like a strange mix? Probably Ralph Barkshi [Coonskin (1975)] had his eye on Yomamoto and Tezukas' work. The animation frequently veers into the experimental, such as incorporating live-action shots of the ocean, or the downright non-representational, such as a polygonal love sequence. My introduction to Tezuka and Yamamoto's Animerama trilogy is a lavishly designed and charmingly randy affair, in the vein of late 60's skinsploitation.

The stereotypical representations of the Arab characters in the story are aged and poor, and should be noted as such.

The animation isn’t as experimental as in Belladonna of Sadness, the other film in this trilogy that I’ve seen, but the visual style is just as colorful. Aldin flees the city and has many more bizarre, dangerous and often tragic adventures including finding Ali Baba’s cave of wonders where he meets a tomboy outlaw with a serious grudge against the sheriff, landing on a strange island full of beautiful horny naked women, escaping a gigantic man-eating monster and discovering a ship that’s actually a wish-granting genie. And that groove is a very fun place to be.

Probably the most interesting aspect of the Animerama films is the high-art sources they construct their narratives from, this is no different, based on The Arabian Nights folk tales. It's worth mentioning how weird and bizarre the majority of the sequences are.
