Notes from Dr. Borkosky

patron añejo vs reposado

Classically herbal on the nose, grassy with lemon/lime overtones.

If standard Patron isn’t ritzy enough for you, now there’s Roca Patron, an artisanal version of the tequila classic.

The aged variants are rested in single-use American bourbon barrels – Roca Patrón Reposado for five months, Roca Patrón Añejo for 14 months; this differs from the core Patrón line, which are aged in a blend of new and used oak barrels.

This process is automatic. It's aged and blended to reflect the fresh flavor of Patron Silver Tequila combined with a subtle hint of oak flavors found in Patron Anejo Tequila.

This enhances and mellows the taste and aroma of the tequila. The final tequila-making steps are fermentation and distillation. No es Patron. Reposado (rested): aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels of any size; Añejo (aged or vintage): aged a minimum of one year, but less than three years in small oak barrels; Extra Añejo (extra aged or ultra aged): aged a minimum of three years in … We’re here to make sense of all this, and help you decide what makes a tequila worthy of an honored place in your glass or behind your bar. Add tangerine slices and muddle further, then top with ice, Exotico Blanco Tequila, simple syrup, lime juice and pomegranate juice.

Slowly pour in the grenadine and allow it to settle to the bottom of the glass (be patient).

Now you know the how, the why and the what of this popular spirit, we hope you’ll choose Exotico. Patrón has also recently introduced a tahona-only extra añejo, Gran Patrón Piedra. But after a sip or two you clearly see the impact of wood just having its way with this spirit. It’s also wonderful in cocktail recipes that play up the spice or demand a tequila that stands up to bold ingredients. Before we go there, why tequila instead of something else? During prohibition, states lucky enough to border Mexico were able to procure the local agave-based spirit from their southern neighbors on the sly. Today we’ll do a deep dive into what makes a tequila a good tequila, and what makes a reposado a reposado. In the sixteenth century the Spaniards arrived, bringing with them the practice of distilling spirits. From here, both the juice and the agave fiber are placed together into wooden fermentation vats for 72 hours, and then distilled in small-capacity copper pot stills.

Unlike some cognacs or Scotch whiskies, which can age for several years, reposado tequilas spend less time in the barrel to achieve optimal character. Their skill and dedication to craft results in Exotico—an award-winning tequila that rises above the ordinary.

The finish fades from sweet and soothing to drying and clean with a twist of lime, a nifty little trick and one that will sure have happy drinkers ordering a second shot at the bar.

Must be 21+ to follow. Exotico Blanco has a crisp, herbal aroma and the robust taste of fresh agave, herbs and just a hint of pepper.

And how is this different from the regular bottling?

Try it in a Tequila Sunrise, or with ginger beer in an Exotico Mule. To make things simple, there are four main classifications of tequila—blanco, reposado, añejo and extra añejo.

Lots of agave hanging in there at first, bringing aromas of rosemary and sage to mingle with some burnt marshmallow and anise notes. Añejo tequila can often be recognized by its rich, caramel color, and it must be aged for at least one year (though most are aged three years) to bear the “Añejo” name. Blanco: Blanco means “white,” but these tequilas are also known as plato (silver) tequilas. Firing on all cylinders. Learn how your comment data is processed. Not all distilleries create their own yeast, but this attention to detail is what distinguishes both Exotico Blanco and Reposado from ordinary tequilas. Reviews, recipes, and industry insight for educated imbibing. To make things simple, there are four main classifications of tequila—blanco, reposado, añejo and extra añejo. From these plants only the sugary, sweet hearts of the plant, called piñas, are used. The agave is cut and trimmed by skilled harvesters known as jimadors using a spade-like tool called a coa. Liquor shortages occurred again during WWII when domestic distilleries switched from spirits to industrial production to help the war efforts. You may have even navigated the liquor store or supermarket aisles only to encounter dozens of brands and types of tequila.

A portion of it is placed into wooden barrels and left to age.

Exotico Reposado ages for over six months instead of the usual two, in white oak bourbon barrels. This is the tequila that is destined to become reposado. Reposado actually means “rested” in Spanish and refers to how the tequila relaxes and matures inside the barrel. The nose is quiet, with a crisp focus on lemon — think lemon meringue pie — and agave in the distant background. The origins began over 2,000 years ago when the indigenous peoples of Mexico enjoyed a traditional drink made from the fermented juice of the native blue agave plant. Instead of that classically anejo silky caramel character we get a slug of raw lumberyard that dominates the spirit and never lets up. This eventually led to the creation of tequila—a unique spirit derived from the ancient practice of cooking and fermenting the agave plant. The piñas, each one weighing anywhere from 80 to 200 pounds, are loaded onto wagons to make the trip back to the destiladora for cooking, fermenting and distilling. What’s a roca?

Choose blanco for vibrant, fruit-forward drink recipes for both its clarity and flavor profile.
