With smooth but powerful prose delivered in Starr’s natural, emphatic voice, finely nuanced characters, and intricate and realistic relationship dynamics, this novel will have readers rooting for Starr and opening their hearts to her friends and family. I have read all of her books and the first was Dear Martin. The thing is, not many romance novels make it up to my favourite list as the genre that dominates the list is Fantasy and the fact that both of these romance novels crawled their way up to the list means a lot to me. Overall, this was a fun (though also heartbreaking) read! Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2020. I’ll write more of a review once I process my thoughts better, but for now: preorder this one. Sexual references land this one in high school territory for me. When a customer purchases the winning ticket at the Gas ’n’ Go where she works but doesn’t claim it, Rico begins searching for the elderly woman she believes to be the winner. Not going to lie. This was thought provoking, well developed, and fast paced. Despite all that--and a compelling narrative voice--I just couldn't get over how problematic the relationship between the two main characters felt. This novel is literally on par with one of my other favourite romance book of all time – The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith. I am have a fan.
Even though I predicted the ending of this one pretty early on, there is just something about Nic Stone's writing that really does it for me and I liked this one SO MUCH. A l. I can’t tell if I want to give this four or five stars. Rico is white, Latinx, and black. Great job Nic Stone. Rico's mother seemed more underdeveloped plot device than character. Dawud Anyabwile.
Also Zan is like one of my favorite YA love interests ever. Like i cannot believe a book can b this good good. [And I also really appreciated the way their story ended that wasn't exactly a happy ending but very hopeful, it made me very happy and it didn't feel forced. She knows all she will ever need to know about each of her classmates. Growing up with a wide range of cultures, religions, and backgrounds, Stone strives to bring these diverse voices and stories to her work.
I really liked all of the characters (except the mother, who drove me crazy.)
